What do the blinking LED indicator lights on my QSX mean?
Blinking LED's give you an indication of the drive health of the hard drives installed in the QSX. Below is a rundown of what the LED indicator lights are telling you:
There are 3 LED indicator lights on your QSX Dual-bay RAID enclosure. 2 green LED’s that represent the 2 installed HDD’s and 1 red LED that is the unit’s power/activity indicator light. The red LED confirms that the unit is powered on and doesn’t have any bearing on the health of your drives.
In JBOD and BIG mode each green LED represents the status of one of the two disks. If the green LED is on, then it means that the drive is healthy. If one of the LED’s goes out, then one of your drives has failed.
When you first setup the QSX in either RAID0 or RAID1 mode, the unit needs to build the RAID array partition. When a RAID array is being built, both green LED’s will blink rapidly. Once building the RAID array has completed, both green LEDs will be solid.
If you choose to build a RAID1 array, after the RAID array is built the unit needs to verify the redundant disk. During this process, one LED will remain solid green, while the other LED blinks at a slow and constant rate. The entire process for building and verifying may take upwards of 4 hours depending on the hard drive capacity. Once the RAID1 array is built and verified, both green LEDs will be solid.
If at any point a drives fails after the RAID1 array was built and verified, the healthy drive’s green LED will remain solid, while the failed drive’s LED will blink at a slow, constant rate.
If you are still unsure about the condition of the disk health, there is a software application you can download that will provide you with a graphical view of the device’s status. It’s called Steelvine and it available to download for free. The link to download the Steelvine software is located at the bottom of the following knowledge base article: https://kanguru.zendesk.com/entries/21544496-verifying-your-raid-partition
