In order to use the Defender HDD/SSD with Windows XP, a few modifications to the system settings have to be made by a user with Administrator privileges.
Setting 1:
Users must make the following changes to Windows XP hard drive policies in order to use the Defender HDD. If they do not make these changes, they might be unable to format the HDD during setup process. And they might be unable to reset the Defender HDD.
- Login into KDM to mount the Defender HDD secure partition.
- Open the Computer Management Console by clicking on the Windows Start menu → Control Panel → Performance and Maintenance → Administrative Tools.
- Double click on Computer Management. The Computer Management Console appears.
- In the left panel, click on Storage → Disk Management
- In the right panel, locate the Defender HDD’s secure partition. It should be listed as a Removable Disk.
- Right-click on the removable disk and select Properties from the menu.
- The Properties window appears. Click on the Policies tab and then select Optimize for Performance as the removal policy.
- Click on OK. You are now able to reset your Defender HDD to the factory defaults.
Setting 2:
If the Defender HDD/SSD cannot enumerate when you log in as a Windows XP restricted user:
- Log into Windows XP as a user with Administrator privileges.
- Click on the Windows Start menu → Run
- Type in “gpedit.msc” and then click on the OK button.
- The Group Policy window appears.
- In the left panel, click on Computer Configuration → Windows Settings → Security Settings→ Local Policies → Security Options
- In the right panel, locate the policy for “Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only”.
- Double click on the policy and then configure the policy to Enabled.
- Log off Windows and then login again as a restricted user. The Defender can now enumerate properly.
Setting 3:
If you are unable to format the hard drive when logged in as a Windows XP restricted user
- Log into Windows XP as a user with Administrator privileges.
- Click on the Windows Start menu → Run
- Type in “gpedit.msc” and then click on the OK button.
- The Group Policy window appears.
- In the left panel, click on Computer Configuration → Windows Settings → Security Settings→ Local Policies → Security Options
- In the right panel, locate the policy for “Devices: Allowed to format and eject removable media”.
- Double click on the policy and then configure the policy to Administrators and Interactive Users.
- Log off Windows and then login again as a restricted user. You are now be able to reformat the secure partition through a Windows XP restricted user account.
